UCC COMMENDS MULTICHOICE FOR CHAMPIONING LOCAL CONTENT AND DRIVING INNOVATION

Kampala – February 12, 2025: Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), the regulatory body of the communications sector in Uganda, has applauded MultiChoice Uganda for its continued investment in local content and spearheading innovation in the entertainment industry. This was during an MOU and license renewal signing ceremony held at UCC offices in Bugolobi.

In his remarks, the UCC Executive Director, Hon. Nyombi Thembo, expressed gratitude to MultiChoice for always supporting UCC in driving initiatives that are critical in enabling content creation.

“We have witnessed your concerted efforts in building the industry and creating platforms and opportunities for our creatives to thrive. We appreciate the critical role you play in promoting local content through your various platforms, including your unwavering support for the Uganda Film Festival (UFF) and other initiatives,” he said.

Speaking at the ceremony, MultiChoice Africa Holdings (MAH) Chief Executive Officer, Fhulufhelo Badugela said that MultiChoice’s business in Africa and Uganda reflects the continued partnership from the regulator, support of subscribers and the hard work of its people.

“As Africa’s most-loved story-teller, we are delighted to demonstrate our commitment in creating African stories by Africans for Africans, training and skilling them as well as providing opportunities and platforms for them to showcase these stories,” she narrated, adding that, “None of this however is possible without a conducive regulatory environment, creative filmmakers, supportive subscribers and a great workforce.”

Badugela further pointed out that in the last few years, Multichoice has introduced ground-breaking services, including DStv Stream and GOtv Stream, as well as self-service mobile applications MyDStv app and MyGOtv app, adding, “Even more recently, we re-introduced an enhanced Showmax 2.0 app, allowing subscribers the opportunity to have the option to view on PC browser, compatible TV or mobile phone in addition to a mobile-only Showmax Premier League option.”

MultiChoice Uganda has operated in the country for the last 30 years, a testament to its commitment to bringing the best in entertainment to its subscribers.

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) was established under the legal framework of the Uganda Communications Act No. 1 of 1997 and the Electronic Media Act of 1996. Consequently, UCC operates as an integrated regulatory body overseeing various sectors, including Telecommunications, Data Communications, Broadcasting, Postal Communication, Radio Communication, and Infrastructure services throughout Uganda. It is also tasked with the responsibility of licensing operations of cinematography theatres and video or film libraries in Uganda.
