Airtel Uganda Strengthens Ties with Uganda Communications Commission: A Vision for the Future

In a significant move for the telecommunications sector in Uganda, Mr Soumendra Sahu, the Managing Director of Airtel Uganda, recently paid a courtesy visit to Hon. Nyombi Thembo, the Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC). Present was Mrs. Susan Wegoye, the Commission Secretary and Director of Legal Affairs; the meeting highlighted the ongoing commitment of both organisations to enhancing communication services across the nation.

The discussions encompassed a wide range of critical issues impacting the industry, including network coverage, signal strength, and billing concerns. Mr Sahu took the opportunity to outline Airtel Uganda’s new strategic vision, emphasising the company’s dedication to fostering innovation within the telecommunications space. His approach is clearly rooted in a desire not only to improve service delivery but also to enhance the overall user experience.
Hon. Thembo expressed gratitude for the collaborative spirit demonstrated by Airtel, recognising the pivotal role that such partnerships play in overcoming challenges within the sector. “We are not just a regulator focused on enforcement and compliance; we aim to cultivate a collaborative, investor-friendly regulatory framework that encourages competition while ensuring consumer protection,” he noted, underscoring the Commission’s commitment to working hand-in-hand with service providers.
A particularly noteworthy aspect of the meeting was the consensus on the necessity of balancing technical solutions with a focus on customer experience. Mr Sahu is committed to addressing significant challenges thoughtfully, signalling a proactive approach to implementing effective solutions, and building a solid foundation for future collaborations.
In concluding the meeting, Hon. Thembo remarked on the complexities involved in decision-making within organisations and the importance of effective communication on sensitive matters. He emphasised that the cooperative spirit displayed throughout their discussions would be essential in achieving their shared objectives and nurturing a positive environment for future initiatives.
As Mr Sahu embarks on his journey to lead Airtel Uganda, there is optimism that his tenure will be marked by fruitful collaborations and innovative projects that will ultimately enhance connectivity and make ICT services more affordable for all Ugandans.

Consequently, UCC operates as an integrated regulatory body overseeing various sectors, including Telecommunications, Data Communications, Broadcasting, Postal Communication, Radio Communication, and Infrastructure services throughout Uganda. It is also tasked with the responsibility of licensing operations of cinematography theatres and video or film libraries in Uganda.
