Uganda Communications Commission has initiated a call for applications for research support towards academic proposals, aiming to promote research focused on developing and utilizing new communications techniques and technologies. The initiative also aims to enhance accessibility to communication services by Persons with Disabilities.
Section 5(1)(l) of the Uganda Communications Act, 2013, obliges UCC “to promote research into the development and use of new communications techniques and technologies, including those which promote accessibility of persons with disability and other members of society to communications services.”

The research proposals should be aligned to the following themes:
- Competition and pricing of ICT services
- Consumer protection issues in the ICT sector
- Cyber security
- Emerging technologies in oil and gas, health, agriculture and education
- Smart cities
- Digital Financial Services
- Technological literacy and youth development
- ICT innovation and entrepreneurship
- Social media access and usage study
- Postal service access and usage study
- Pay TV service access and usage assessments
- Impact of the deployment of private mobile networks on the operations of public mobile networks
- Uptake of advanced communication technologies by mobile network operators
- Regulation of Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine-to-Machine(M2M) communications
To qualify, researchers must be eithergraduate students, inter-university collaboration researchers, post-doctoral academics or undergraduate students. In the case of undergraduate and postgraduate students, the projects must have been approved by the project supervisor – a member of faculty. The research support packages will vary according to the different categories highlighted, with figures ranging from UGX 10,000,000 to 100,000,000.
Upon completion of the project, the researcher is required to disseminate the research findings during a conference or dissemination workshop organized by UCC. Key outputs also include publishing at least one article in a peer-reviewed journal.
Not exceeding 20 pages, the research proposal shall be written in Microsoft Word, Times New Roman, Font 12, single spacing, and normal margins. Submission by 28th February 2025 at 5:00PM should be in soft copy to the email: research@ucc.co.ug.
