UCC Weekly update 20th – 24th MAY 2019

The Uganda Communications Commission (the Commission) signed an agreement between Uganda and Hollywood Film Festival at the recently concluded Cannes Film Festival. This agreement paves the way for Ugandan Content to showcase in  Hollywood every year, capacity building and exploring opportunities of co-productions. The Cannes Film Festival is arguably, the World’s most prominent film festival.

The Commission concluded regional stakeholder’s forums in Gulu and Mbale engaging FM Radio Broadcasters to raise awareness on the legal and regulatory environment in the broadcasting sector. The discussions aimed to improve information gaps, obtain feedback and address concerns on noncompliance of statutory, regulatory and quality of service requirements in FM Radio broadcasting.

The Commission seeks to recruit nine (9) individuals with proven skills and competencies to assist the organisation in achieving its goals and positioning to become a World Class Communications Regulator. More details here; https://wp.me/paP880-fQ

The Commission has made recommendations to the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance on development of Postal sector, finalised and submitted for review, commercial principles for passive infrastructure.

The Commission conducted an exploratory field visit to ATC tower sites for an appreciation of the investment made towards the development of the Communications sector

The Commission has had back to back engagements with the IMF team on cooperation between the Commission and the Bank of Uganda on Regulating the digital financial sector.

The Commission engaged Dolby and Quad-A to discuss potential training opportunities for the film industry to build on successes in the improvement of sound and audio quality for audiovisual content.

The Call For Papers is on for the 5th National Conference on Communications (NCC) the will take place from 3rd  – 4th September 2019. The NCC provides an opportunity to build capacity and strengthen the academic and industry communities in communications, particularly in the research of locally relevant solutions. The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) was established under the legal framework of the Uganda Communications Act No. 1 of 1997 and the Electronic Media Act of 1996. Consequently, UCC operates as an integrated regulatory body overseeing various sectors, including Telecommunications, Data Communications, Broadcasting, Postal Communication, Radio Communication, and Infrastructure services throughout Uganda. It is also tasked with the responsibility of licensing operations of cinematography theatres and video or film libraries in Uganda.
